How to Swing a Golf Club

learn how to swing a golf clubYour swing is one of the most important parts of the game of golf.  Most golfers can spend years working on their swings without perfecting it.  There are some essential things to consider when learning about how to swing a golf club properly.

Use the Right Club

If you intend on having a good swing, always choose the right club for the shot.  Know your clubs and the distance you should get from them.  If you are consistent with your swing you’ll almost always be able to choose the correct club for conditions.  Carry your complete set of golf clubs with you so that you’ll have access to each club if you need it.

Grip the Golf Club Properly

Proper grip is essential when swinging a golf club.  The grip should neither be too tight nor too loose.  There are several different styles of grips that are acceptable when playing golf.  It really doesn’t matter which you use as long as it’s comfortable for you and works properly.

The power for your swing comes from your core.  Those who have more muscles aren’t necessarily better or more powerful golfers.  Instead of using just your arms, your swing should be powered by your legs and torso as well.  Your entire core should wind up with the swing and then unwind to power through.  Learn to use your legs and torso when swinging the club.

Keep Your Eyes on the Ball

Your eyes should be on the ball for your entire swing.  Start with your club slightly behind the ball.  While you bring up your backswing, keep your eyes glued to your ball.  That is the place where you’ll be seeing impact.  As soon as the club hits the ball and it begins to move, follow the ball with your eyes.  Complete your swing as you stay focused on the flight of the ball.

Follow Through

Your follow through is as important as your initial swing.  The way your club goes after impact will determine the direction the ball will go.  Some people hit the ball and then simply don’t worry about the rest of the swing.  This is a mistake.  Instead, always complete your swing by following through all the way.  Be open to making changes to your swing if you seriously don’t know how to swing a golf club properly.  Many people hold onto their old ways, even though they aren’t doing anything good for their game.  Instead, be prepared to get rid of any bad habits that you may have developed and work on a swing that works.

Practice

One of the most important things that you can do to improve your game is to practice.  You’ve probably noticed that everyone has his own way of swinging.  If you’re new to the game you may want to take lessons.  This can assist you in learning the swing.  Get to the practice range as often as possible to try your swing with each of your clubs.  Watch golf tournaments on television to observe how the pros swing.  Read a book that is dedicated to improving your golf swing and guide you the proper way on how to swing a golf club.
